Small-Group Technical Pottery Classes in Zurich

Attentive ceramic practice in a calm studio environment.

Clay & Tao offers small-group pottery classes in Zurich centered on sustained technical learning, wheel throwing, hand-building and material understanding. Through regular engagement with clay, participants develop skill, confidence and a more grounded relationship to making.

Rather than isolated workshops, ceramic learning unfolds progressively over time.

A calm space for serious ceramic practice

The studio is designed for individuals seeking a technically rigorous yet supportive environment in which to learn ceramics properly. Participants include beginners wishing to build strong foundations, creative professionals looking for continuity, and experienced makers refining their approach.

Many participants describe the studio as a rare pause within the intensity of urban life — a place where focused work and quieter perception can coexist.

What you develop through practice

– Technical confidence on the wheel through consistent repetition
– Structural understanding of clay behaviour during forming and firing
– Sensitivity to proportion, surface and spatial presence
– Practical knowledge of glazing processes and material outcomes
– A coherent and personal ceramic direction over time

Participants progressively learn to shape clay through both hand-building and wheel techniques, developing structural confidence and a clearer understanding of how technical decisions influence final results.

A precision-based wheel throwing approach

Wheel throwing is introduced through an attentive and ergonomically grounded approach prioritising stability, breath awareness and structural refinement. This supports consistent technical progression and a more embodied relationship to movement and material.

Ongoing research into glaze formulation, firing processes and material behaviour ensures a rigorous and responsible working environment.

Wheel work unfolds naturally as continuity in practice is established.

Small-group teaching and meaningful progression

Classes are limited to four participants, allowing sustained personal guidance and real technical development. Rather than fixed-term courses, Clay & Tao offers flexible practice formats designed to support long-term progression.

Ceramic practice is approached as something that stabilises and matures over time.

Most participants begin with a 10-hour or 20-hour practice format.

Wheel Pathway

Beginning wheel throwing practice

At Clay & Tao, wheel throwing is introduced as part of a sustained ceramic practice rather than as a one-time activity.

Participants wishing to begin working on the wheel start with a private foundational session designed to establish the essential conditions for technical progression.

Private Wheel Pathway session (120 min)
CHF 150 — available to participants committed to a 10-hour ceramic practice pack or more.

This preparatory work focuses on postural alignment, clay centring and the development of attentive movement.
It provides the technical and perceptual foundations necessary to approach wheel throwing with greater stability and confidence over time.

Many participants find that this initial step significantly supports long-term progression and a more grounded relationship to the wheel

Seasonal ceramics workshops

A series of seasonal ceramic workshops offer focused moments of immersion throughout the year, complementing regular studio practice.

Over time, participants develop not only technical skills but also a coherent and personal relationship to making.

Private & Group Ceramic Experiences

Clay & Tao offers small-scale ceramic sessions for private groups, creative teams or special occasions.

These experiences focus on hand-building practices, allowing participants to engage with clay in a calm and supportive studio environment.

Wheel throwing is introduced within the context of ongoing practice and is therefore not included in private group sessions.

A studio environment that supports focus

Set slightly apart from urban intensity, the studio offers conditions that encourage concentration, patience and attentive making. Working with clay becomes a way to slow perception without reducing technical ambition.

Ceramics informed by rhythm and cycles

The studio’s approach is subtly informed by Taoist perspectives on transformation and cyclical change. For some participants, Tao Alignment consultations offer complementary insight beyond studio practice.
