Winter Workshop — From the Invisible to Form

Create a personal ceramic altar through Qimen cosmological practice

This winter intensive invites participants to explore how symbolic perception and personal intention can take material form through ceramic practice.

Over three consecutive sessions, participants design and build a personal ceramic altar using direct hand-building techniques. The altar is conceived as a spatial structure that supports reflection, orientation and intentional presence in daily life.

The workshop combines practical ceramic instruction with an introduction to selected Daoist cosmological models used to understand cycles, timing and relational dynamics.

What you will do during the workshop

– Learn how to design and construct a personal ceramic altar
– Work with hand-building techniques such as slab construction, carving and surface development
– Explore symbolic form, proportion and spatial presence
– Receive an individual Tao Alignment consultation based on Qimen cosmology
– Reflect on how symbolic orientation can inform material choices and creative direction
– Complete your piece through glazing or optional pit firing

The process focuses on clarity of intention, progressive refinement of form and attentive engagement with material.

No previous ceramic experience is required.

A winter practice of depth and essentialisation

Aligned with the introspective qualities traditionally associated with the winter season, the workshop emphasises slowing down, reducing excess and allowing form to emerge from attentive observation and internal reflection.

Participants leave with a finished ceramic structure and a deeper understanding of how symbolic frameworks can be integrated into embodied creative practice.

Students using a studio class pack (10/20 sessions or Friend of CAT packages) are subject to the same cancellation policy. Late cancellations will not be eligible for refund or rescheduling.

  2. The price for material amounts to 10 CHF per clay kilo (the rate is subject to modification should the electricity or material costs change). Should you want that I finish your ceramics, the cost amonts to 30 chf per clay kilo.

  3. Courses are held in English, German, Italian and French depending on the participants wish.

  4. Students are asked to leave their workplaces clean. Cleaning time is included in the lesson time. It takes between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on the student's speed.

  5. We kindly ask that all pieces be finished and picked up within 3 months of their start date.

  6. For safety reasons, glazing must be done during designated hours. Students are required to wear black nitrile gloves and an FFP3 mask while glazing. Eating or drinking during glazing is strictly prohibited.
