Pit Fire Workshop — Clay & Tao

Discover one of the oldest ceramic techniques: firing clay directly in an open fire.

In this workshop, you will:

  • Create your piece at the Clay & Tao atelier with a special clay (deadline to finish: 8 November)

  • On the day of the firing, prepare your ceramic with oxides, natural materials, and other additions

  • Watch as the fire transforms your piece with unique, unrepeatable markings

Date: 6.12.2025

Location: Forest near Zürich (details shared after booking)
Duration: Half day (atelier preparation + firing)
Price: 2 credits at your applicable rate + 30 CHF extra (fire activity)

Please note: The workshop will be canceled in case of heavy rain or snow.

Important to note

  • This fee is only for the fire.

  • If you don’t yet have studio credits, please choose a package of 2, 3, 10, 20, or 40 hours.

You’ll need at least 4 hours in total:

  • 2 hours or more in the studio → to make your pieces

  • 2 hours in the forest → to fire them

Please note: in 2 studio hours, you can make 1–2 pieces maximum, depending on your speed.

Each participant leaves with a one-of-a-kind ceramic, shaped by flame, earth, and chance.

  1. Cancellations made at least 1 month before the event will be fully refunded. Cancellations made less than 1 month before the event are non-refundable, regardless of the reason. Students using a studio class pack (10/20 sessions or Friend of CAT packages) are subject to the same cancellation policy. Late cancellations will not be eligible for refund or rescheduling.

  2. The price for material amounts to 10 CHF per clay kilo (the rate is subject to modification should the electricity or material costs change). Should you want that I finish your ceramics, the cost amonts to 30 chf per clay kilo.

  3. Courses are held in English, German, Italian and French depending on the participants wish.

  4. Students are asked to leave their workplaces clean. Cleaning time is included in the lesson time. It takes between 10 and 15 minutes, depending on the student's speed.

  5. Every hour begun is due in full.

  6. Bringing your own materials is not allowed. Only studio-provided materials may be used.

  7. We kindly ask that all pieces be finished and picked up within 3 months of their start date.

  8. For safety reasons, glazing must be done during designated hours. Students are required to wear black nitrile gloves and an FFP3 mask while glazing. Eating or drinking during glazing is strictly prohibited.

  9. Clay is a precious, non-renewable material. We encourage you to be mindful and intentional when choosing which pieces to keep and fire.

  10. Swiss law applies, Geneva courts are competent.
