Immersive Introductory Pottery Session (3 Hours) in Zurich

Extended ceramic experience at Clay & Tao studio

This 3-hour pottery session offers a deeper first experience of working with clay in a calm and focused ceramic studio in Zurich.

Designed for beginners and those wishing to explore ceramics in a more sustained way, the extended format allows participants to move beyond initial discovery and engage in a more complete creative process. You will have time not only to shape a form but also to refine its structure and begin exploring surface expression.

Participants are guided through the creation of a small functional or sculptural object — such as a cup, bowl or plate — while developing an initial understanding of volume, texture and material behaviour.

This session is ideal for those wishing to dedicate meaningful time to a creative experience, a personal occasion or a first immersive encounter with ceramic practice.

What you will explore

– Introduction to hand-building pottery techniques
– Refinement of form and structural awareness
– Surface development through engobes and texture
– Basic understanding of drying and firing processes

Wheel throwing may be explored by participants who already have prior experience or who have completed the wheel introduction pathway.

After your session

Your piece will remain in the studio to dry before undergoing a first firing (bisque firing at approximately 980 °C).

After this stage, you may:

– return for a glazing session (additional class required), or
– request glazing by the studio (additional fee).

A second firing takes place at approximately 1220 °C.
Once completed, your finished ceramic piece will be ready for collection.

The first 500 g of clay and a transparent glaze finish are included.
Additional materials or glaze options may incur supplementary costs.

Studio environment

Clay & Tao is a small-group ceramic studio in Zurich offering a quiet and light-filled space that supports focused creative work and attentive learning.

Tea and coffee are available during sessions.

After purchase, you may schedule your session online according to availability.

  9. Bringing your own materials is not allowed. Only studio-provided materials may be used.

  10. We kindly ask that all pieces be finished and picked up within 3 months of their start date.

  12. Clay is a precious, non-renewable material. We encourage you to be mindful and intentional when choosing which pieces to keep and fire.

  13. Our studio works with a small kiln, which means firings are done gradually and only when the kiln is full, to avoid wasting energy. Working with clay takes time: drying, firing, cooling… Each step is important to ensure your pieces turn out well. I do my best to have every creation fired as quickly as possible, but there may be some waiting time. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

  14. Swiss law applies, Geneva courts are competent.
